BRIEF HISTORY: The Diocese is situated in Madhya Pradesh, and comprises the following districts: Jabalpur, Katni, Damoh, Mandla, Dindori, Shahdol, Umaria, Narsinghpur and the Tahsil of Lakhnadon in Seoni District, all located at the very center of Madhya Pradesh and divided pastorally into five Deaneries.
It was in the year 1858 that the first Priest settled down in Jabalpur and built a small Chapel. Fifteen years later a Church was constructed which became the Cathedral Church, and a convent for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chamberry was built.
Originally, Jabalpur was part of the Diocese of Visakapatanam and in 1887 it became part of Nagpur Diocese. In 1929, the Norbertine
Fathers of the Abbey of Berne (Holland) came to work in the region of Jabalpur. By the Brief De Romanorum Pontificum dated July 18, 1932, the Prefecture Apostolic of Jabalpur came into existence by dismembering from the Diocese of Nagpur the districts of Jabalpur, Mandla, Narsinghpur and Tahsil of Lakhnadon; from the Diocese of Allahabad, the districts of Sagar, Damoh, Rewa, Sidhi, Shahdol Satna, Chattarpur and Tikamgarh. Rt. Rev. C. Dubbleman O. Praem. Was appointed first Prefect Apostolic of Jabalpur.
The Prefecture Apostolic was raised to a Diocese by the Papal Bull Qui Genus Humanum dated July 5, 1954 and Rt. Rev. C. Dubbleman O. Praem was consecrated first Bishop of Jabalpur on 19th October
1954.
In 1963 when the Archdiocese of Bhopal was created, the district of Sagar was dismembered from the Diocese of Jabalpur. Sagar became an Exarchate on August 15th, 1968 and it was entrusted to the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI Fathers). With the formation of Exarchate of Satna on July 29, 1968 the districts of Rewa, Sidhi, Satna, Panna, Chattarpur and Tikamgarh were dismembered from the Diocese of Jabalpur. TITA 758 In 1964, Rev. Leobard D'Souza was elected Co-adjutor Bishop of Jabalpur and was ordained by H.H. Pope Paul VI on December 3, 1964 during the International Eucharistic Congress in Bombay. Bishop C. Dubleman O. Praem retired on 8th January, 1966 and Bishop Leobard became the Bishop of Jabalpur Diocese. In September 1975, Bishop Leobard left Jabalpur to head the Archdiocese of Nagpur and Rev. Fr. Xavier Barret filled the post of Administrator of the Diocese. In February 1977, Rev. Fr. Theophane O. Praem's appointment as third Bishop of Jabalpur was announced, and he received Episcopal Ordination on the 31 March 1977. In June 24, 1997, Rev. Fr. Gerald Almeida's appointment as Co- Adjutor Bishop of Jabalpur was announced, and he received Episcopal Ordination on 17th September 1997. Bishop Theophane retired as the Bishop of Jabalpur on 16.05.2001 and Rt. Rev Gerald Almeida became the Bishop of Jabalpur. Bishop Conrad Dubbelman O. Praem.
