Life Story

Born into a loving middle-class family, George was the youngest of seven children, with six brothers and one sister. His father, A. Ambrose, was a pioneering motor mechanic, while his mother, Margaret Ambrose, dedicated herself to raising their large family. At a young age, George joined the Army and bravely served during the China War in 1962, enduring the harsh conditions of the ice frost and walking for hundreds of kilometers to safety across the Bihar border. As a member of the Army Signal Corps, he participated in numerous tournaments throughout India, including Kashmir. After leaving the Army, George joined the Vasco Da Gama team in Goa, where he led his team in national tournaments, becoming well-known in Maharashtra, Kerala, and Goa. His talent on the football field earned him prominence in sports news, featuring in action shots and even gracing the front page of the popular magazine Sports Week. The All India Football Federation mourns the passing of former India international George Ambrose, who left this world on Sunday, August 7, 2022. A talented defender, Ambrose made his international debut against Burma (now Myanmar) during the Olympic qualifiers in Rangoon (now Yangon) in 1972, representing India in three matches. He also contributed to the Indian National Team's Merdeka campaign in 1973. AIFF acting General Secretary Mr. Sunando Dhar expressed deep sadness, recognizing Ambrose as an inspiration to countless footballers. At the domestic level, Ambrose showcased his talent for Goa in the Santosh Trophy from 1971 to 1975, netting two goals, and was a vital member

Cherished Memory

ANAJI: George Ambrose, a cherished former India defender and captain of Vasco Sports Club, passed away in Jabalpur on Saturday at the age of 78. Employed with Central Railway, he had made Jabalpur his home for many years. Former Vasco SC president Vinod Parkkot fondly remembered Ambrose, stating, “He and Avinder Singh joined Vasco from the Corps of Signals and were exemplary ambassadors for the club. Ambrose’s excellent anticipation and skill with aerial balls made him a remarkable defender.” After starting his football journey with the Corps of Signals, Ambrose joined Vasco in 1967, leading the team to numerous trophies, including the Stafford Challenge Cup, Bandodkar Gold Trophy, and Chakola Gold

The reliable defender represented Goa five times at the National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy, including in 1972 when the tournament was played in Goa for the first time.
Those who followed the tournament will always remember the semifinal clash between Goa and Bengal, not necessarily for the tough battle or the tiebreaker held the next day, but also an incident involving Ambrose and Subhash Bhowmick.
“During a corner kick that was taken by Bengal, Bhowmick went up for the header and when landing found that his shorts were entirely torn. Nobody knew how Ambrose managed to do that. Bhowmick had to run to the (substitute’s) bench and replace his shorts,” said Peter Valles, the youngest member of the Goa squad in 1972.
Valles also spent time with Ambrose at Vasco and saw the defender’s greatness from close.
“You could learn so much from Ambrose. He first partnered (TK) Chathunny in central defence and was always composed. Everyone was fond of him. He was a big hit with the crowd and entertained them well,” said Valles.
In 1973, Ambrose was part of the India squad that took part in the Merdeka Cup.Ambrose left Vasco for Central Railway in 1974 after he was handed a job and stayed with them till his retirement. He was based in Jabalpur where he breathe his last
