Mr. Bhatia paid for my engineering degree when my family could not. He asked for nothing in return except that I do good work and help someone else one day. I am trying.

गुरप्रीत सिंह भाटिया की याद
Gurpreet Singh Bhatia was the kind of man who filled every room he entered — not with noise, but with a warmth so steady it felt like sunlight. Born on 19 July 1965 in Amritsar, Punjab, he grew up in the shadow of the Golden Temple, which he always said gave him his understanding of what peace actually looked like.
After completing his engineering degree from Punjab Technical University, Gurpreet built a successful textile export business over 25 years, employing over 80 people at its peak. He was known in the trade for absolute honesty — a reputation he guarded more fiercely than any contract. "Your word is your only real asset," he told his employees repeatedly, and he lived it entirely.
He married Harpreet Kaur in 1991 and together they raised two children, Simran and Jaspreet, in a household where Gurbani played every morning and guests were treated as divine gifts. He was an avid reader — history, philosophy, and Punjabi poetry particularly — and his study had shelves that reached the ceiling.
For over twenty years, he was a dedicated sevadaar at Darbar Sahib, volunteering in the langar hall every Sunday without exception. His friends describe a man who could talk cricket, quote Bulleh Shah, close a business deal, and comfort a grieving stranger all in the same afternoon.
Gurpreet Singh Bhatia passed away suddenly on 15 September 2024 following a cardiac event. He was 59 years old. He is survived by his wife Harpreet, his children Simran and Jaspreet, and a community that is still trying to understand a world without him in it.
Every year on Baisakhi, Papa would take us to Darbar Sahib before sunrise. We would walk in silence through the cool morning air — he would hold our hands the whole way, even when we were teenagers and thought we were too old for it. Standing at the sarovar watching the first light hit the gold, he would say quietly: "Remember this. Whatever happens, there is always this." We remember it, Papa. We always will.
