Life Story

He was the sixth child in a loving family of seven, born to a humble motor mechanic and a devoted housewife. His parents were among the first twenty Tamil families to settle in Jabalpur after World War II, creating a home where faith blossomed despite the absence of a proper church. A priest would visit every three months until a Dutch priest, Doubblemann, became the first bishop of the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and Paul. The Ambrose family gathered for evening rosaries, and ultimately, Nicholas answered the call to priesthood. A gifted athlete and footballer, Nicholas found his true vocation in shepherding others in faith. As the first abbot of the Abbey of Jamtara in Jabalpur, he worked tirelessly to bring his village into the spotlight as India's inaugural abbey. Affectionately known as Swamy Ji with villagers and Fr Nicky in urban faithfull, he connected deeply with each family, embodying his guiding principle: “I have come to serve and not to be served.” His life was very committed and loved spending his time amongs his floks knowing eachone by their names.

Cherished Memory

Nicholas Ambrose, son of Shri A. Ambrose and Shrimati Margaret.

Born on 12 May 1933 in Jabalpur, Abbot Nicholas received the spirit of service from his parents. Young Nikki, adorned with auspicious qualities and divine virtues, completed his early education at St. Thomas Primary and Higher Secondary School. He completed his higher education with a B.A. from St. Aloysius College. During this period, due to his sporting excellence, he got the opportunity to play football for the Indian Universities. Had he not chosen the path of priesthood, he would surely have become the Pelé of Jabalpur, and his name would have been inscribed in golden letters in Indian football history due to his talent. He was a very good high jump athelte hold his record for very long time displayed still in Saugar University now Dr. Harisingh Gour University.

In his youth, he renounced worldly attachments and, at the age of 17, responded to the first divine call by stepping towards the priesthood. He made the Norbertine Monastery his field of action and took a vow to walk in step with the times.

In 1120 AD, in the place called Prémontré in France, a bold and zealous man from Germany founded this Norbertine religious community — none other than Saint Norbert. In 1923, missionaries sent from the Abbey of Berne in Holland established the Norbertine family in India. For the past 80 years, they have been continuously engaged in preaching the Holy Gospel of Lord Jesus Christ and serving the Church. This heritage exists in India in the form of the Norbertine community at Jamtara, Jabalpur.

Abbot Nicholas Amritmani Ambrose was ordained as a priest on 14 July 1963 by the hands of the first Bishop of the Jabalpur Diocese, Right Rev. Bishop Conrad Dubbelman O. Praem. Prem, at the Abbey of Berne in Holland.
